Racing & Fitness
Sup is a great sport for improving your fitness and we have a large group of paddlers doing fitness training at the lake during our SUP Club sessions. Many of these paddlers are also racers but some paddlers also just enjoy paddling for fitness without the competitive element.
If you want to take your paddling to the next level please speak to one of our instructors and they will be able to advise you on how to start fitness training.
Scott from Haywood sports also runs instructor led fitness sessions every Sunday morning and more information on how to join in can be found below.
Bray Lake Race Series
Bray Lake SUP Club hosts two race series each year, a summer and a winter series. Each series consists of 5 races and we have a variety of short distance races throughout the series including technical, distance, river and the super lap. Each race is roughly 6-8km or 4km for novices.
Everyone is welcome to take part, even if you only learnt the day before and we use a division system so that you will be racing against others of a similar speed.
The races are a great way of testing your paddling skills and fitness but more important than that they are the best way of meeting other keen SUPers and learning more about this great way to spend time on the water.
To get a series finish you will need to take part in at least 3 races in the series. You can take part in less races you just won’t get an overall series finish, however you will get a finish place for each race.
Our races have a really friendly atmosphere with everyone coming together after the race for prize giving to
In the last few years we have introduced a division based system to separate racers so that you are competing against people of a similar speed. We believe this is a fairer approach than splitting the field by board size and type.
Before registering for a race you will need to complete a 2km time trial on the board you are going to complete the series on. This time will then determine which division you need to enter for the race. You can either complete the time trial at Bray Lake or independently. Before registration opens for the next series we will usually have a dedicated SUP Club session for people to come and complete their time trials.
These are the current time gaps for each division,
Division 1 – 13:29 and under
Division 2 – 13:30 – 14:59
Division 3 – 15:00 – 16:29
Division 4 – 16:30 – 17:59
Division 5 – 18:00 and over
To gain a series finish you need to complete at least 3 races on the same board. After each race we will evaluate the results and anyone we feel is in the wrong division will be asked to move up or down for the remaining races.
